At Summit Food Coalition, we’re connecting you to our local food system. From food access and education to food entrepreneurship and policy—we’re helping our community work together to build a just, sustainable, and vibrant local food system.

And you can help.

Is this coalition for me?

  • Does your work intersect with food?
  • Would access to nutritious and local food benefit you, your clients, or your patients?
  • Do you work with local entrepreneurs that are considering launching a food business?
  • Are you a farmer?
  • Is your neighborhood working to improve its food landscape?
  • Are you challenged by policies that make it difficult to succeed in your work around food?
  • Or do you care about the foods you eat and feed to your family?

If you said yes to any of these questions, you might be a perfect fit for the Summit Food Coalition—and we’d love to invite you to our next Stakeholder Gathering.

Join us on August 22 from 10am to 12pm at First Congregational Church at 292 E Market Street in Akron to help set our path to a more just, sustainable, and vibrant local food system. On behalf of myself, our members, partners, and volunteers, thank you for caring about our local food system and for believing in the health of our community.

Reserve your spot at the table here.

Seeking Local Food Hero Nominations!

In 2017 Summit Food Coalition's inaugural Local Food Hero Award was given to Lisa Nunn at our Savor the Summit event.  This year, we are looking to you -- our friends and partners -- to nominate someone who, through their work, community activism, or volunteerism, has made a significant and positive impact on our local food system.  From Lisa, "Receiving the Local Food Hero Award was a great honor for me and for Let's Grow Akron.  I felt humbled to receive the award on behalf of LGA staff, volunteers and neighbors who work hard to grow, prepare and preserve food together while building community.  Food brings us together in spite of our differences.  The community we serve is often overlooked and the work we do together is not always valued as it should be. The Local Food Hero Award created more awareness and recognition for the importance of community gardening particularly in underserved neighborhoods.  We are following in the footsteps of our visionary found Elaine Evans who started LGA 30 years ago.  I am honored to continue her legacy, learning and growing together."
We will once again honor the recipient at our Savor the Summit event and fundraiser, scheduled for October 11th at Trailhead Event Space.  Nominations for the Local Food Hero Award can be made here, and should be submitted no later than August 10th for consideration.

Urban Ag Ordinance Proposal Progress

Summit Food Coalition has hosted three stakeholder brainstorming sessions related to an urban ag ordinance.  There have been a number of great ideas shared over the course of those meetings.  We are now moving on to the research stage- looking in depth at our list of ideas and seeing how other municipalities are bringing those to life, and how we might adapt those practices and guidelines for the City of Akron.

We are currently asking for stakeholders to share their preferred topic to research as well as convenient times to meet here.  We are planning to host research progress meetings beginning in July.

Here are the notes from each brainstorming session: May 18, June 4, June 13.

Additionally, here are some resources we are looking to during our research:
